Road in Duki to be named after female doctor who survived acid attack: Balochistan CM Bugti

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti announced on Sunday that a major road in the Duki district will be named after Dr Mahnoor Nasir, a doctor who suffered an acid attack in June, in honour of her “bravery, resilience and services as a medical professional”.

Dr Nasir, a 29-year-old female doctor at Quetta’s Civil Hospital, was seriously injured in June when a hospital employee allegedly threw acid on her, suffering severe burn injuries to her face, chest, legs and other parts of her body.

The attacker, later identified by police as Humayun Shah, was said to have been kil­led in an encounter after law enforcers tra­ced him as he attempted to flee on a bus.

In a post on X, the chief minister lauded the “bravery, courage and sense of duty” displayed by Dr Nasir and said that a road in Duki had been renamed after her.

He maintained that Dr Nasir’s determination was an “example for the daughters of Balochistan”.

“Recognising the services of brave and duty-bound citizens and encouraging them is our responsibility,” he wrote on X.

The notification which CM Bugti shared stated that as a “token to public recognition of Dr Mahnoor Nasir, of her bravery, resilience and services as a medical professional, it has been decided to rename ‘Haji Amanullah Masjid Road, adjacent to Damani Chowk, Duki’ as ‘Dr Mahnoor Nasar Road, Duki’, with immediate effect”.

The attack had drawn widespread condemnation, including from doctors, government officials and the courts. Following the incident, doctors in Quetta went on strike, demanding a thorough investigation.

Only days after the attack, in a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court ruled that “vitriolage” (acid attack) was an offence more heinous than homicide.
