"Statement by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar AhmadPermanent Representative of Pakistan to the UNAt the UN Security Council Meeting on Ukraine(24 August 2026)********President,We are please to see you chair another meeting of this Council today.I thank USG Di Carlo and USG Fletcher for their briefings, which present a grim picture of the unfolding humanitarian consequences of the prolonged conflict in Ukraine.2. The devastating toll of this conflict on civilian populations, is as tragic as it is staggering.3. We deplore the escalation- the scale and intensity of attacks carried out by the parties on multiple fronts, upending lives and livelihoods in the affected regions.4. Reports of attacks targeting critical infrastructure related to energy and food supply are also deeply concerning. Such attacks further exacerbate the already fragile global food and energy security, affecting people far beyond the conflict zone.5. We regret the harm to civilians, damage to the civilian infrastructure and the reported targeting of humanitarian actors and related infrastructure. The protection of civilians, humanitarian personnel and civilian infrastructure is a fundamental obligation under International Humanitarian Law, and one that must be respected by all parties.6. Violation of IHL risk further escalation, worsen human suffering, and, diminish the prospects for lasting peace.President,7. Pakistan supported resolution 2774 tabled by the US, in February last year. My delegation and others in this chamber, have made repeatedly called for holding earnest and meaningful dialogue to bring durable peace and stability to the region. This entails eschewing the quest for a military solution. In this context, we reiterate the imperative of an immediate and complete cessation of hostilities, reverting to diplomacy, and the resumption of a sincere and structured dialogue.8. A mutually acceptable peaceful settlement, consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, corresponding to the legitimate security interests of all sides, and the relevant multilateral agreements, remains the only viable path to lasting peace.9. Pakistan will continue to support all endeavours aimed at achieving a just, comprehensive, durable and peaceful resolution of this conflict.I thank you"
