The UN Security Council released a press statement on 26 May 2026 condemning the suicide terrorist attack on a train in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan, describing the act as heinous and cowardly. The statement notes that at least 14 Pakistani nationals were killed and dozens were injured, including women and children, and acknowledges a claim of responsibility by the Balochistan Liberation Army via the Majeed Brigade. It offers the Council’s deepest sympathy to the families of victims and to the government and people of Pakistan, and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. The Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms threatens international peace and security and emphasized the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors accountable and to bring them to justice. It urged all states to cooperate with the Government of Pakistan in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. The press statement reiterated that acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of motive, wherever and by whom they are committed. It underscored the obligation of all states to combat terrorism by all means consistent with the UN Charter and with international human rights law, international refugee law, and international humanitarian law. In my view, this statement signals a necessary, unified stance against terrorism and reinforces the principle that cross-border cooperation and accountability are essential to addressing such threats. However, the impact of such condemnations depends on follow-through: credible investigations, sanctions against sponsors, timely support for victims, and concrete steps to address the underlying conditions that fuel militancyβ€”such as governance gaps, human rights protections, and socio-economic grievances in affected regions like Balochistan. A robust, rights-respecting approach combining justice with development and reconciliation is essential to reduce the appeal of extremist violence and to provide long-term security for Pakistan and the broader region.
