This tactical pause suggests Fateh is deliberately allowing the Taliban to push deeper into the area before his fighters encircle them, a classic ambush strategy. His forces remain deployed at key positions in Qoghaz, Zaghar, Shakh Dara, Wajm Bala, and Wajm Payin, maintaining a defensive perimeter. Meanwhile, the Taliban appears to be avoiding direct confrontation with Fateh’s well-organized fighters, aware that a full-scale clash could lead to a humiliating defeat. In an attempt to buy loyalty, the Taliban sent 50 million Afghanis to Badakhshan, reportedly distributing funds among dissatisfied local commanders. However, according to local sources, the plan backfired: several commanders accepted the money but refused to participate in any operation against Fateh. This development highlights the Taliban's fragile internal control and the growing autonomy of regional power brokers. In my opinion, this situation underscores a critical flaw in the Taliban's post-2021 governance: reliance on bribery rather than genuine loyalty. Fateh's strategic patience and the commanders' duplicity suggest that the Taliban's authority in northern Afghanistan is eroding, as local factions increasingly prioritize self-preservation over centralized commands. If this trend continues, Badakhshan could become a flashpoint for broader anti-Taliban resistance.
