In a disturbing escalation of information warfare, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan has begun circulating AI-generated footage that fabricates a meeting between dissident commander Jumma Khan Fateh and senior Taliban leaders Mullah Yaqub and Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat. The deepfake appears designed to undermine Fateh's credibility among his followers and create confusion about his loyalties. Fateh, a former Taliban commander who broke with the regime over its repressive policies and refusal to form an inclusive government, has publicly and repeatedly declared that he will never meet with the current leadership or surrender under any circumstances. The timing is critical: Fateh leads a growing armed resistance in Badakhshan province, and the Taliban's use of AI to misrepresent reality signals desperation to crush opposition by any means, including deception. In my opinion, this move is both a sign of weakness and a dangerous precedent. The Taliban, lacking the military capacity to defeat Fateh outright, is resorting to digital manipulation—a tactic that erodes trust not only in their own propaganda but in all information emerging from conflict zones. However, it also highlights the urgent need for media literacy and verification tools in Afghanistan. If the Taliban can simulate a meeting, what will they fabricate next? A false assassination attempt? A staged surrender? The international community must condemn this misuse of AI, while independent fact-checkers work to expose the manipulation. Fateh's stance remains firm: he insists on a political settlement that respects Afghanistan's diversity, and no CGI will change that reality.
