In a landmark move for civil aviation, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has granted South Air the go-ahead to launch regular flight operations after proving its capabilities with a successful Gwadar trial. The airline, owned by the SOS Group, will operate two ATR-72 turboprop aircraft on 10 domestic routes under a TPRI license, strategically targeting tier-2 and tier-3 cities such as Gwadar, Turbat, Quetta, Sukkur, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Peshawar. Ticket prices are expected to range between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000, making air travel more accessible. Notably, Nishat Fatima has been appointed as the first female CEO of any airline in Pakistan—a historic milestone. With 6.3 million domestic air passengers annually and a vacuum left by the bankruptcy of Serene Air last October, South Air fills a critical gap. Further, the airline plans to lease ATR-42s to launch routes to remote northern areas like Chitral, Gilgit, and Skardu. Currently, only four airlines operate in Pakistan—PIA, Airblue, Fly Jinnah, and Air Sial—all using jet aircraft. My opinion: The introduction of turboprop flights to underserved cities is a game-changer for socio-economic growth. Turboprops are ideally suited for short runways and high-altitude northern regions, offering fuel efficiency and lower operating costs, which translate into affordable fares. By connecting remote areas like Gwadar, Turbat, and Gilgit to primary hubs, South Air will unlock trade, tourism, and medical access. For instance, Gwadar's port potential and northern tourism could see a massive boost. This move also empowers women in leadership and decentralizes air travel, reducing reliance on a few major airports. However, success will depend on reliability, on-time performance, and post-pandemic demand. If executed well, South Air could become a catalyst for regional development, bridging the infrastructure gap and improving quality of life.
