India's Skyroot Aerospace recently launched Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital rocket, placing payloads into a 450 km orbit at a mere $3 million cost—making India the third nation after the U.S. and China to achieve private orbital missions. This feat, led by young entrepreneurs with no prior industry experience, underscores the power of private innovation. In contrast, Pakistan's Space Vision 2040 is halfway through, relying on government funding and SUPARCO, with a space centre under construction in Chakri, observatories in Lahore and Karachi, and ongoing flight test range expansion. While Pakistan has selected a site for a space port, the question remains: should the government allow private entrepreneurship in space? In my opinion, absolutely yes. Private sector involvement could drastically reduce costs, accelerate development, and foster innovation—especially for dual-use satellites, lunar rovers, manned spaceflight, and astronaut visits to space stations. By integrating engineering universities and incentivizing startups, Pakistan can leverage private capital and talent to compete globally. The Indian example proves that private enterprise can achieve breakthroughs at a fraction of traditional costs. Pakistan's space ambitions would be bolstered exponentially by opening the sector to private players, unlocking economic and strategic benefits.
