BANNU - In a display of exceptional operational capability, Pakistan's security forces have successfully eliminated a suicide bomber following a nearly 2-kilometer pursuit in the Hundi Khel area of Bannu district, foiling what could have been a devastating terrorist attack .

According to security sources, the operation was launched after credible intelligence indicated the presence and movement of terrorists planning to carry out a major act of terrorism in the area. Acting swiftly, security forces cordoned off the suspected location and engaged the terrorists as they attempted to escape .

Daring Pursuit and Engagement

Security forces tracked the fleeing suicide bomber for nearly 2 kilometers before successfully neutralizing him in an exchange of fire. The pursuit and engagement prevented the attacker from reaching his intended target, which was believed to be a crowded civilian area or security installation .

A suicide vest and trigger mechanism were recovered from the eliminated terrorist, indicating that he was fully prepared to carry out his mission before being intercepted. One additional terrorist was reported injured during the operation .

The recovery of the explosive vest and equipment confirms that the terrorists were prepared to execute a major attack, which was averted through timely intelligence and swift action by security forces .

Bannu: A Persistent Flashpoint

Bannu district and its surrounding areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have emerged as key flashpoints in Pakistan's ongoing counter-terrorism campaign . The region has witnessed repeated attacks by terrorist elements, including:

• A vehicle-borne suicide bombing targeting a police station in Bannu on July 15, 2026 

• An attempted attack on Bannu Cantonment that was foiled by security forces on March 29, 2026 

• A series of intelligence-based operations in July that resulted in the killing of 24 terrorists in Bannu and adjoining areas 

India-Backed Terrorism Continues

The military has identified the terrorist elements as members of Fitna al-Khawarij, which it describes as an Indian-backed proxy group . These militants have been involved in multiple terrorist activities and attacks on innocent civilians .

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has stated that the Afghan Taliban regime has "yet again failed to stop the Khwarij from use of Afghan soil for terrorist activities inside Pakistan" .

Security sources have reiterated that intelligence-based operations against Fitna al-Khawarij and other terrorist elements will continue until the complete elimination of terrorism from the region . A search and clearance operation was conducted in the surrounding area to ensure that no accomplices had managed to escape and to eliminate any remaining threat .
