LAHORE: The federal government on Tuesday notified a reshuffle in the Punjab police high command, with Special Branch Additional Inspector General Rao Abdul Kareem appointed as the new inspector general of police (IGP), replacing Dr Usman Anwar.
A day earlier, a highly-placed source confirmed to Dawn that the government has approved a change in the provincial policeβs top ranks.
In three separate notifications, available with Dawn, Dr Anwar was notified as the new director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), replacing current DG FIA Riffat Mukhtar, who was transferred and directed to report to the Establishment Division, while Kareem was notified as the Punjab IGP.
In a post on X, the Punjab police also confirmed the announcement and expressed optimism that βunder his inspiring leadership, the Punjab police will achieve milestones in protecting citizensβ lives and property, ensuring swift delivery of justice, and further strengthening the law and order situationβ.
According to a separate press release issued by the Punjab police, Kareem belongs to Nawabshah and joined the police service in 1996 as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP).
βHe belongs to the 24th Commons of Police Service of Pakistan,β the statement said.
He has previously held the posts of βcommandant Punjab constabulary, DIG Traffic Punjab, RPO Gujranwala, DIG Telecommunicationβ.
Kareem has also previously served as ASP UT Sukkur, SDPO Sukkur City, Latifabad in Hyderabad and Chiniot, the statement added.
The senior police official was also posted as superintendent of police (SP) in Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sheikhupura, while in Mianwali, Kasur, and Jhang, he served as the district police officer (DPO).
Meanwhile, in a post on X, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi offered best wishes to outgoing IGP Anwar for the new role as DG FIA.
βDr Usmanβs transformational leadership reshaped Punjab police, setting new benchmarks in professionalism, reform, and public service,β the interior minister said.
βAs he takes charge as DG FIA, a new era begins,β he added.
Naqvi voiced optimism that βwith his (Anwarβs) vision and dynamism, the public will witness real, visible change in the coming monthsβ.
Dr Anwar was appointed Punjab IG during a large reshuffle by the Punjab caretaker government in January 2023. He was performing his duties with the National Highways and Motorway Police before being appointed Punjabβs police chief.
