The 370-km Gilgit-Chitral National Highway (N-140) is in advanced stages of completion, representing a monumental infrastructure project financed by the federal government at a cost of 70 billion rupees ($250 million). This vital artery will serve as an alternative route to the Karakoram Highway and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), linking the northern areas of Pakistan with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It will connect some of the most breathtaking valleys and the iconic Shandur Pass at an elevation of 12,000 feet, famous for the annual Shandur Polo Festival held every July. Strategically, the highway will secure areas near the China border and the Wakhan corridor on the Afghan frontier, enhancing military and trade logistics. The project is expected to spur heavy vehicle movement and development activities in Gilgit, Ghizer, Yasin, Mastuj, and Chitral valleys. In my opinion, projects like the N-140 are of immense national importance. They not only improve connectivity and spur economic growth in remote regions but also strengthen Pakistan's strategic posture along sensitive borders. The massive funding requirement—$250 million—is justified given the long-term returns: tourism boost, easier transport of goods, and integration of underdeveloped areas. However, the government must ensure transparency, timely completion, and maintenance to avoid cost overruns. Such investments are critical for national cohesion and should be prioritized alongside other development initiatives.
