In a powerful message on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering commitment to combating the devastating human, economic, and social toll of drug abuse and trafficking. He highlighted the multidimensional costs that affect societies worldwide, particularly the emergence of new psychoactive substances, sophisticated trafficking networks, and the alarming accessibility of drugs to youth. The Prime Minister outlined a balanced, four-pronged strategy led by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF): aggressive law enforcement to dismantle trafficking rings, demand reduction through prevention and awareness, treatment and rehabilitation for addicts, and enhanced institutional capacity. He stressed the expansion of awareness programs in educational institutions in collaboration with provincial governments, alongside strengthening treatment facilities. Pakistan is also deepening international partnerships via intelligence sharing and joint operations to counter cross-border trafficking. My opinion: This holistic approach—combining punitive measures with public health and education—is exactly what Pakistan needs. For too long, the war on drugs has been one-dimensional, focusing only on arrests. By simultaneously addressing supply, demand, and recovery, the government acknowledges that addiction is a health crisis, not just a crime. The call to action for parents, teachers, community leaders, media, and youth is critical; grassroots awareness can break the stigma and prevent the next generation from falling into the trap. However, implementation remains key—resources must reach the most vulnerable areas, and rehabilitation centers need proper funding and oversight. This message shows political will, but the real test lies in execution.
