Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, held a meeting with the NGO Working Group on the Security Council to exchange perspectives on the key issues currently on the Council's agenda, as well as Pakistan's priorities during its 2025-2026 elected term. The discussion encompassed developments in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, alongside deliberations on UN peacekeeping operations. Pakistan reaffirmed its strong commitment to multilateralism and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, emphasizing the peaceful settlement of disputes and the indispensable role of civil society and non-governmental organizations in advancing sustainable peace, ensuring the protection of civilians, and supporting humanitarian efforts worldwide. In my view, this outreach is a timely and constructive signal that state actors and civil society can collaboratively address complex security challenges; it foregrounds humanitarian protection and accountability while inviting broader participation in peacebuilding and decision-making. For effectiveness, such engagement should translate into tangible outcomesβclear civilian-protection guidelines within peacekeeping mandates, more predictable funding and resources for humanitarian operations, and robust mechanisms for civil-society monitoring and input in UNSC deliberationsβensuring that commitments to multilateralism translate into measurable progress on the ground. Pakistan's emphasis on multilateralism, through this kind of dialogue, reaffirms its long-standing foreign policy stance and has the potential to contribute to regional stability by bridging diverse perspectives within the UN system.
