Second, Pakistan called for a radical overhaul of the international financial architecture: making global economic governance more democratic and equitable, with easily accessible concessional financing and meaningful debt relief for developing nations. Third, and most controversially, Pakistan firmly rejected any expansion of permanent seats on the Security Council, arguing that such a move would entrench existing inequalities and dysfunction. Instead, it pushed for comprehensive reform that makes the Council more representative, democratic, transparent, accountable, and effective—without creating new permanent members. My opinion: Pakistan’s position is both principled and pragmatic. The call to revitalize the General Assembly is long overdue—the body has been sidelined by great-power politics. On financial reform, the demand for debt relief and fairer lending terms is urgent; the current system perpetuates dependency. The rejection of new permanent seats is the most critical point: adding more permanent members (like India, Brazil, or Japan) would only multiply veto paralysis and deepen the North-South divide. True reform means rotating non-permanent seats, limiting veto power, and ensuring regional rotation. Without that, the UN will remain a relic of 1945.
