In a recent UN Security Council briefing, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Usman Jadoon Ahmad expressed strong support for the sustained diplomatic engagement in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), specifically highlighting the African Union-led mediation, the Doha Framework, and the Washington Accords. He commended the efforts of the African Union, Qatar, the United States, Angola, and the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region. Pakistan acknowledged that important progress has been made in advancing dialogue and establishing a framework for a ceasefire, but stressed that the focus must now shift to implementation and securing a durable cessation of hostilities. Ambassador Ahmad also endorsed a pragmatic, phased approach to MONUSCO’s future role, noting that the mission remains the only impartial international presence with the institutional experience, logistical reach, and operational capabilities needed to support stabilization and civilian protection. In my opinion, this statement reflects a balanced and realistic stance from Pakistan. It rightly applauds the diplomatic groundwork laid by multiple international actors, but wisely warns against complacency. The real test is whether these frameworks can translate into tangible security improvements on the ground. The emphasis on MONUSCO’s continued relevance is crucial—many peacekeeping missions face premature downsizing before conditions are ripe. Pakistan’s call for a phased approach acknowledges both the need for eventual transition and the present reality that the DRC still requires robust international support to prevent a relapse into violence. This is a prudent, grounded position that prioritizes long-term stability over political expediency.
