The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) relies on its fleet of IL-78 Midas multi-role tanker transports (MRTT), purchased from Ukraine in 2006 for $26 million each, to sustain its strategic airlift and aerial refueling capabilities. These aircraft, modified with removable 18,230-liter fuel tanks in the cargo hold, can transfer up to 85,720 kg of fuel via hose-and-drogue, and in beast configuration carry ~50 tons of cargo – making them critical for missions sourcing missiles, weapons, vehicles, and covert materials from China, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Despite the Russia-Ukraine war and supply chain disruptions, PAF maintained high serviceability through a mid-life upgrade during the COVID pandemic, enhancing performance for Mirage, JF-17, and J-10C refueling. However, the IL-78 airframes are aging. India, facing similar obsolescence with its own IL-78s, plans replacements with Boeing 767 or Airbus A321 platforms incorporating Israeli/DRDO modifications. Given this context, PAF should seriously consider inducting the Chinese Xian Y-20 (Yun-20) as a modern MRTT successor. The Y-20 offers greater payload capacity (~66 tons), newer avionics, and compatibility with Chinese-origin fighters (JF-17, J-10C). It would reduce dependence on Ukrainian supply chains and align with Pakistan's deepening defense ties with China. My opinion: Yes, PAF should increase its aerial refueling capacity by inducting the Y-20, which provides a cost-effective, indigenous-supportable solution for long-endurance modern warfare demands, while potentially phasing out the older IL-78s over the next decade.
