In a meticulously planned and executed counter-terrorism operation dubbed 'Iron Fist-3', Pakistani security forces delivered a crushing blow to militant networks operating near Miranshah, the heart of North Waziristan. The operation, supported by ground troops and drone surveillance, resulted in the elimination of 62 Improvised Terrorist Militants (IMPs), among them 4 High-Value Targets (HVTs) believed to be key commanders. The forces systematically cleared three villages, dismantled 14 entrenched bunkers and underground tunnels, and destroyed a major ammunition dump, effectively crippling the militants' logistical and defensive infrastructure. Eight additional suspects were apprehended for interrogation. Notably, the operation also rescued a young orphan who had been subjected to 'Bacha Baazi'—a deeply abusive practice of child sexual exploitation used by some terrorist factions. A substantial cache of heavy weaponry was recovered, including RPGs, M-16 rifles, and 12.7mm machine guns. From my perspective, this operation underscores the Pakistani military's sustained commitment to rooting out terrorism, but also highlights the grim reality of how extremist groups perpetuate human rights abuses. The rescue of the child is a poignant reminder that the fight against terror is as much about protecting the innocent as it is about neutralizing threats. While the tactical gains are significant, long-term stability will require continued efforts to address the socio-economic conditions that allow such groups to recruit and hide.
