In a decisive blow against cross-border terrorism, Pakistani security forces successfully foiled a major suicide attack targeting the Meryan Police Station in Bannu. The plot involved an explosives-laden vehicle intended to inflict mass casualties, but alert personnel destroyed the vehicle before it could reach its target. During the operation, the alleged facilitator, Abdul Rahman—son of Gul Muhammad—was arrested, while the suicide bomber was identified as Rahmatullah Alias Mahmod, a militant from Paktika Province, Afghanistan. Mahmod reportedly received training at a camp in territory controlled by the Afghan Taliban. This revelation underscores a persistent and grave security threat: militant networks operating from safe havens across the border in Afghanistan, under the de facto rule of the Taliban, continue to plan and execute attacks inside Pakistan. The arrested facilitator is believed to have provided logistical support, including transport and coordination, for the attack. In my opinion, this incident is a stark reminder that the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan did not bring peace to the region—it simply provided a new sanctuary for terrorist groups targeting Pakistan. The porous border and the Afghan Taliban's reluctance, or inability, to curb such activities make it imperative for Pakistan to maintain robust intelligence-led operations and to pursue diplomatic pressure on Kabul. While the security forces' swift action is commendable, the underlying issue of cross-border terrorism remains unresolved. Until the Afghan interim government takes concrete steps to dismantle these training camps and extradite fugitives, Pakistan will continue to face the brunt of such plots. The Bannu foiling is a victory, but the war against terror is far from over.
