In a disturbing display of disinformation, social media accounts associated with the proscribed Joint Action Committee (JAAC) have been caught circulating an old video in an attempt to fabricate a false sense of urgency and public unrest. The video, which is approximately one month old—recorded on 10 June—shows residents of Darek village, located barely 2 km from Rawalakot, traveling to attend a public gathering at the Rawalakot Eidgah Ground. Despite being entirely contextually accurate for its original timing, the accounts are now sharing it as though it depicts current events, deliberately misleading viewers into believing there is ongoing large-scale mobilization. In my opinion, this tactic is a textbook example of how malicious actors exploit emotional triggers to undermine public trust. By recycling old footage and stripping it of its original date, they aim to create a record of chaos or resistance where none exists. This not only harms the credibility of genuine news but also risks provoking unnecessary tension in a region that needs stability. It is imperative that digital platforms and local authorities act swiftly to flag such content, while citizens must practice vigilance by cross-checking dates, sources, and official confirmations before sharing. The truth is that the video is harmless—but the lie wrapped around it is dangerous.
