The apparent metallic / mirror effect is related to the aircraft's complex low-observable surface system, including specialized coatings & topcoats and the underlying airframe materials.The Smithsonian's examination of this mirror like materials describes that the Stealth jet gets a base coat of radar-absorbent or deflective material, followed by a specialized topcoat. The topcoat was developed to address multiple signature-management requirements, including infrared considerations (IRST)."
