Israel Intercepts Gaza Aid Flotilla Near Crete, Detains Activists Before Release in Greece

CRETE/GAZA - In a brazen act of state-sponsored piracy, Israeli naval forces intercepted 22 civilian vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters hundreds of miles from Gaza, violently boarding the ships, smashing engines, jamming communications, and detaining approximately 175 unarmed humanitarian activists carrying nothing but baby formula, medicine, and food for the starving children of Gaza.

This is not security. This is not self-defense. This is the desperate act of an occupying power terrified of the truth being exposed to the world.

A Brutal Night Raid on Peaceful Activists

Witnesses aboard the flotilla described Israeli commandos swarming the vessels under cover of darkness on April 30, pointing semi-automatic weapons and lasers at civilians, ordering them to kneel, and then deliberately destroying the ships' engines and navigation equipment before retreating.

The Israeli navy then left hundreds of civilians stranded on powerless, broken vessels directly in the path of a massive approaching storm.

This is the face of the occupation. Not Gaza rockets. Not resistance. But heavily armed soldiers attacking grandmothers, doctors, and students from 39 different nations who dared to sail with powdered milk for Palestinian babies.

Two Activists Still Imprisoned

While most detainees have been transferred to Greece and released, two remain caged in Israel:

What International Law Says

Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which Israel has not ratified, interception of civilian vessels in international waters is restricted to cases of piracy, slave trading, or unauthorized broadcasting. Humanitarian aid flotillas fall under none of these exceptions.

Under the Fourth Geneva Convention, collective punishment-including blockades that deny civilians food and medicine-is a war crime.
