Following a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing, Araghchi told reporters that the 40-day conflict has fundamentally changed Iran's standing on the world stage.
"Our Chinese friends also believe that Iran after the war is different from Iran before it," Araghchi said in remarks carried by Iranian mediaΒ .
"Iran has achieved an upgrade in its international standing and has proven its strength and authority. Therefore, a new era of cooperation between Iran and other countries lies ahead"Β .
Strategic Partnership 'Stronger Than Ever'
Araghchi described China as a "sincere friend of Tehran" and emphasized that cooperation between the two nations "will be stronger than ever" under current circumstancesΒ .
The Iranian foreign minister noted that the two sides reviewed major issues including the war and how to end it, ongoing negotiations, matters related to Iran's peaceful nuclear program, sanctions, bilateral ties, and the Strait of HormuzΒ .
"We agreed not only to continue these consultations but also to reach a new level of cooperation," Araghchi statedΒ .
Wang Yi reiterated China's principled position on the situation, emphasizing that Beijing has been "actively promoting peace and facilitating talks since the outbreak of hostilities"Β .
China's foreign minister called for a "comprehensive ceasefire," stating that "resuming hostilities is even less acceptable" and "adhering to negotiations is particularly important"Β .
China as a Trustworthy Partner
Araghchi's visit to Beijing is the latest stop in a broader Iranian diplomatic offensive following the US-Israeli war that began on February 28Β . The Iranian foreign minister traveled to China following consultations in Russia, signaling a coordinated diplomatic push by TehranΒ .
Wang Yi pointed out that "China is a trustworthy strategic partner of Iran" and expressed Beijing's willingness to consolidate and deepen political mutual trust while maintaining high-level exchangesΒ .
The Chinese foreign minister also reaffirmed China's support for Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, expressing appreciation for Tehran's "readiness to seek political solutions through diplomatic means"Β .
The 25-Year Cooperation Agreement
The strengthened relationship builds on the 25-year comprehensive strategic partnership agreement signed between Iran and China, which continues to serve as the foundation of bilateral tiesΒ . Wang Yi previously described the partnership as one that "will not be affected by the current situation, but will be permanent and strategic"Β .
The agreement, which entered its implementation phase in December 2021, includes Chinese investments in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, health, and technologyΒ . Cooperation in the pharmaceutical and medical fields is also being implemented under the strategic partnershipΒ .
Strait of Hormuz and Regional Framework
Discussions between the two foreign ministers also covered the Strait of Hormuz, where Araghchi emphasized "the need to respect Iran's rights"Β .
Wang Yi expressed hope that parties involved would "promptly respond to the strong call from the international community" to restore normal and safe passage through the straitΒ .
Iran's foreign minister also expressed support for establishing a new post-war regional framework that can "balance development and security," praising China's four-point proposal for safeguarding and promoting peace and stability in the Middle EastΒ .
Timing Amid US Diplomacy
Araghchi's visit to Beijing came just days before President Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive in China for high-stakes talksΒ . Sources indicate Beijing views the upcoming summit as a significant opportunity to secure a more stable long-term relationship with the United StatesΒ .
China has played a significant yet indirect role during the conflict, serving as the biggest buyer of Iranian crude oil while also working to mediate behind the scenesΒ . Trump has previously suggested that Beijing helped bring Iran to the negotiating tableΒ .
Iran's Position in the Region
Araghchi briefed his Chinese counterpart on the latest developments in Iran-US negotiations, stating that "facts have proven that political crises cannot be resolved through military means"Β .
The Iranian foreign minister emphasized that Iran will "resolutely safeguard its national sovereignty and national dignity while continuously building consensus through peaceful negotiations to seek a comprehensive and permanent solution"Β .
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi noted that the issue "could be promptly addressed"Β .
Looking Ahead
With a fragile ceasefire currently in place following Pakistan-mediated negotiations, both Iran and China appear committed to deepening their strategic alignmentΒ . Araghchi expressed hope that with China assuming the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, "constructive developments" aimed at preventing ongoing violations of international law would followΒ .
"Iran trusts China and looks forward to its continued active role in promoting peace and ending the conflict in the region," Araghchi saidΒ .
