On December 4–5, 1971, amid the Indo-Pakistani War, Sakesar radar station in Pakistan was attacked by the Indian Air Force. Historical accounts report the loss of three Hunter jets and three pilots in action, including the Officer Commanding, underscoring the night’s heavy costs. Despite the damage, the radar system was restored and back online within three days, a rapid repair and recovery that kept the air defense network functioning. With the primary radar compromised, the Marconi Condor was deployed as an interim Ground-Controlled Interception unit at the frontlines, perched at about 5,000 feet to regain radar coverage and direct interceptors. This episode highlights both the vulnerability of fixed installations to aerial strikes and the resilience and ingenuity of engineers and airmen who kept critical sensing and command-and-control capabilities alive under fire. From a broader perspective, it underscores the ongoing need for redundant, mobile, and hardened C4ISR assets in modern air defense, lest a single strike leave a defense network blind.
