HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN INDIA: Mosques, Churches Targeted in Bengal as Hindutva Activists Unleash Terror

KOLKATA - In the days following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, a wave of systematic violence has been unleashed against minority communities across the state. Mosques, churches, and other places of worship belonging to Muslims and Christians are being destroyed by Hindu mobs, while activists openly celebrate the attacks on social media .

The violence, described by critics as "organized terror," has seen minority populations living in fear as saffron flags are hoisted on captured opposition offices and religious sites come under attack . The international community remains silent as India's largest democracy descends into communal chaos.

Mosques Attacked, Renamed, and Bulldozed

In what appears to be a coordinated campaign of erasure, Hindutva activists have targeted Muslim religious sites across multiple districts.

"Masjid Para Road" Renamed

In Islampur, BJP workers removed the nameplate of "Masjid Para Road" and replaced it with "Netaji Palli Road" as election results pointed to a saffron party victory on counting day. Videos from the scene show several workers climbing on top of the signboard structure with BJP flags. One of them, with a hammer in hand, repeatedly hit the engraved letters to remove the name. Waving their saffron flags, the remaining workers chanted and celebrated the move, declaring that Bengal "belongs to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose" .

Bulldozers Near Mosques and Meat Shops

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien accused BJP supporters of bringing a bulldozer near New Market in Kolkata to demolish a meat shop during victory celebrations. Sharing a video on social media, O'Brien alleged that the bulldozer was brought "with police permission" while Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel reportedly stood nearby .

Destruction of Lenin Statue in Murshidabad

In Murshidabad's Jiaganj, a Lenin statue was reduced to rubble by a group of youths armed with iron rods, hammers, and shovels. Eyewitnesses claimed slogans of "Jai Shri Ram" echoed through the area while the attackers smashed the statue in full public view. Some witnesses alleged the attackers shouted: "Lenin will no longer remain here. Shivaji's statue will be installed here" .

Left leaders compared the incident to the 2018 toppling of Lenin statues in Tripura after the BJP's victory there, claiming Bengal was now witnessing a similar "politics of intimidation and ideological erasure" .

Call for Genocide Against Muslims

Perhaps most alarming is the open incitement to violence circulating on social media. A video circulating online shows a man identified as Ankit Tiwari openly promoting the killing of every single "maulana and jihadi," including children, following the BJP's victory .

Ankit Tiwari's words:

"TMC ke karyakartao ne hazaro hindu ke hatya kardigayi. Ab BJP ki sarkar aane ke baad ek hi baat bolunga. Ki do saal tak tab tak kaato jabtak bacche, budhe, maulana, jihadi, sab khatam nai hojate. Kyunki khoon ka badla khoon hi hota hai."

(Translation: TMC workers have murdered thousands of Hindus. Now that the BJP has come to power, I have just one thing to say. Keep cutting them down for the next two years, until every last one of them is eliminated-the children, the elderly, the Maulanas, and the Jihadis. Because blood must be avenged with blood.)

He captioned the video with: "Bengal ke Hinduo khul kar badla lo" (Hindus of Bengal, take revenge openly) .

This explicit call for genocide-targeting children and religious figures-has not been condemned by the BJP leadership or Indian authorities.

West Bengal BJP President Blames Muslims for Violence

In a disturbing pattern, BJP leaders have blamed Muslim communities for the violence they are suffering. West Bengal BJP president and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar claimed that the "call for riots was given from the loudspeaker of the masjid" following violence in Murshidabad .

He further made inflammatory statements about "change in demographics" and warned that a BJP-led government would "ban any religious place used for such activities" - a threat to the constitutional right to religious worship .

Systematic Targeting of Opposition and Minorities

The violence has not been limited to religious sites. TMC offices across several wards in Kolkata have been seized or defaced, with BJP flags hoisted in their place .

At least four people have been killed in the post-poll violence, with dozens injured .

Minorities Living in Fear

The Muslim community in West Bengal-roughly 27% of the state's population-is experiencing profound anxiety. In Muslim-majority neighborhoods across central and north Kolkata, an "uncharacteristic silence" has descended. The usual rhythm of daily life has slowed to a crawl, with groups huddling around mobiles in a state of visible disbelief .

An elderly resident of Zakaria Street, requesting anonymity, said: "There was a lot said during the rallies that made people here anxious about their place in the state's future" .

The Voter Purge: A Bloodless Genocide

The violence did not emerge from nowhere. It was preceded by a systematic effort to disenfranchise minority voters. The Guardian reported that 9.1 million names were deleted from West Bengal's electoral roll-more than 10% of the electorate-with Muslims disproportionately affected .

In some Muslim-majority constituencies, almost half the voters were deleted, including those with documents proving their Indian citizenship. The process was described by critics as a "bloodless political genocide" and a "constitutional crime" .

TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh stated: "What has happened in Bengal is a constitutional crime. It is a crime against the people of India, against the people of Bengal" .

The Election Commission's deployment of an AI-assisted algorithm to flag "logical discrepancies" in voter data-without accounting for cultural variations in Bengali name spellings-led to millions having to prove their citizenship, including Nobel laureate Amartya Sen .

BJP's Rhetoric of "Demographic Change"

The attacks and disenfranchisement must be understood within the BJP's broader ideological framework of "demographic change" and "infiltration." While campaigning, Prime Minister Modi had claimed that "large-scale illegal migration has altered the demography of West Bengal" and promised "big action" once the BJP came to power .

Home Minister Amit Shah described the voter purge as necessary to prevent "infiltration in order to protect the country's democratic system from being polluted" .

Human Rights Organizations Silent

Despite the documented violence-including attacks on religious sites, calls for genocide, mass disenfranchisement, and political killings-international human rights organizations have remained largely silent. The United Nations, European Union, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have not issued condemnations of the systematic targeting of minorities in West Bengal.

The same voices that regularly lecture Pakistan on minority rights have nothing to say about mosques being attacked, churches being threatened, and Muslims being openly targeted for killing in India's largest democracy.

What Comes Next

As the BJP consolidates its power in West Bengal, the coming days could see even greater violence against minority communities. Threats of further bulldozer action hang over Muslim neighborhoods, and the open calls for violence on social media have gone unpunished.

The TMC has accused the BJP of unleashing a "reign of terror" after the polls. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee stated: "Party offices are being destroyed, homes are being attacked, and workers are being targeted. We will not remain silent" .

But the question remains: Will the world finally speak up? Or will it continue to look away as Hindutva terror descends on Bengal?

Muslims, Christians, and other minorities in India are suffering torture and violence. Their places of worship are being destroyed. Their right to vote has been stripped. Their children are being threatened with murder. And the world watches in silence.
