The Gadani Ship Breaking Yard, the world’s third largest, stretches across 10 km of Balochistan’s coastline, 40 km west of Karachi. A federal upgradation project worth Rs 13 billion is underway to bring the yard into full compliance with the Hong Kong Convention’s safety and environmental standards. This initiative will establish a dedicated labor colony, hospital, school, water treatment plant, hazardous material handling facility, integrated management system, and a rescue and firefighting station. Currently, the yard produces over 1 million tons of scrap steel annually, meeting 20% of Pakistan’s domestic re-rolling mill demand, directly employing 10,000 workers and indirectly supporting 200,000 people. With capacity to handle 132 blocks, it competes directly with India’s Alang and Bangladesh’s Chittagong yards. In my opinion, the prospects of Pakistan’s blue economy are promising but hinge on sustainable development. The Gadani upgrade signals a shift from primitive, hazardous operations to a formalized, eco-friendly industry—vital for capturing global ship recycling orders. However, Pakistan must overcome infrastructure gaps, regulatory enforcement issues, and competition from India and Bangladesh, which have more mature recycling sectors. The blue economy—encompassing shipbreaking, fisheries, maritime trade, and coastal tourism—could contribute significantly to GDP if integrated with green policies and investment. Currently, its contribution remains modest (under 2% of GDP), but with projects like this and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s maritime focus, it has potential to double in a decade. The key is balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship to ensure long-term viability.
