ANKARA - Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and senior military leaders during an official visit to Ankara, where he received Türkiye's top military award and was welcomed with a guard of honour .

President Erdoğan personally received Field Marshal Munir at Ankara Airport for a closed-door meeting, with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Chief of Turkish General Staff General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, and National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) Director Ibrahim Kalin also in attendance .

Guard of Honour and Top Military Award

Upon arrival at the Turkish General Staff Headquarters, Field Marshal Munir was accorded a guard of honour by a tri-services contingent of the Turkish Armed Forces . He then held a detailed meeting with General Bayraktaroğlu, where the two discussed regional security dynamics and professional matters of mutual concern .

In recognition of his "meritorious services and commitment to bolstering bilateral military cooperation," General Bayraktaroğlu conferred upon Field Marshal Munir the Turkish Armed Forces Distinguished Service Medal - Türkiye's highest military honour .

High-Level Defence Talks

During the visit, Field Marshal Munir also met with Turkish Minister of National Defence Yaşar Güler and General Metin Tokel, Commander of the Turkish Land Forces . The discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye in the "evolving geopolitical environment" .

The ISPR stated that the "visits signify the resolve of both nations to further strengthen their multifaceted defence relationship and continue their joint efforts for regional peace and stability"Β .

Expanding Pakistan-Turkey Defence Cooperation

The high-level engagements come amid growing defence collaboration between the two nations. Pakistan and TΓΌrkiye have deepened cooperation across multiple domains, with major defence deals expected to followΒ .

In March 2026, Türkiye formally delivered the second "Babur"-class MILGEM corvette to the Pakistan Navy at a ceremony in Istanbul attended by President Erdoğan . The contract, signed in 2018, includes four corvettes - two built in Türkiye and two in Pakistan - marking one of the largest defence cooperation projects between the two countries .

Additionally, Pakistan and TΓΌrkiye are reportedly discussing collaboration on the KAAN 5th-generation fighter jet program, which could see Pakistani engineers deeply involved in the project and potentially result in joint production facilitiesΒ .

A Broader Strategic Framework

Field Marshal Munir's visit to Ankara is part of a broader strategic alignment that also includes Saudi Arabia. A trilateral defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and TΓΌrkiye has been in the pipeline for nearly a year, with all three countries deliberating on a draft agreementΒ .

The potential trilateral pact would combine Saudi Arabia's financial resources, Pakistan's nuclear deterrence and manpower, and TΓΌrkiye's advanced defence industry and combat experience, creating what analysts have described as a "Muslim NATO"Β .
