Claim: The new Sector Commander for Karachi ISI has assumed his duties following the departure of Brigadier Aijaz. Allow me to introduce Brigadier Ahmed Ali Madni. He was commissioned from the Pakistan Military Academy 101 Long Course in the year 2000. In PMA he was reputed to be a cunning cadet who knew his way around due to being the son of a Brigadier from the Corps of Artillery. As a cadet he mastered the art of appeasement towards his seniors which would help him get away with punishments even if it was at the expense of informing upon his own course mates. He got himself appointed as senior gentleman cadet to appointment holders because of the same personality trait. He was commissioned in the 9 Frontier Force Regiment in the year 2000. It is noteworthy that he did not join his father's regiment and chose a career path which would afford him extensive opportunities for progression being an infantry officer but with the comfort of a mechanised arm since 9FF is a mechanised infantry battalion. This pattern indicates that he had thought it through from the very beginning and was willing to sacrifice any moral principles for the sake of his career progression which is not uncommon among officers like Madni. Since he knows he is not General material he has plans as he told one of my friends during his recent stay in Islamabad. He plans to make money. At the end of the day even Generals have the same aim but more opportunities. For every rank there are only certain appointments which afford an officer abundant opportunities for corruption and making money. To be posted on such an appointment one needs to have the right kind of connections through appeasing and at times bribing his seniors and exploiting their weaknesses which most of the time are wine and women. He maintained close associations throughout his career with many Generals including DG H ISI Major General Saad al Abd and he has very close ties with the Commander of 11 Corps Lieutenant General Omer Bukhari and DG MO. His results on the War Course were an unremarkable B grade irrespective of a serving Lieutenant General visiting his accommodation during the course; 'B grade' means that he has reached his career rank ceiling. Nevertheless he actively sought appointment as a Sector Commander a posting commonly viewed as offering substantial opportunities for personal enrichment. His father had been an opportunist who never fully capitalised on the chances available to him. The son proved more adept. Through the influence of Lieutenant General Mehmud and General Musharraf he obtained the appointment of Principal of an Army Public School college despite lacking the necessary qualifications. His residential history progressed from Askari 4 in Rawalpindi to the Defence Housing Authority reflecting advancement secured through patronage rather than professional distinction. In summary he exemplifies the officer for whom rank connections and personal opportunity have taken precedence over professional competence and institutional integrity.
