Claim: Pakistan’s Biggest Data Center—or Its Biggest Data Trap? Sky47 could be a tremendous resource for Pakistan. But a data center cannot be trusted merely because it is large, technologically advanced or branded as “sovereign.” Trust depends on who controls it, who can access it and whether the law can restrain those in power. That is the real problem. In the hands of a corrupt and coercive power structure—a system of dacoits and bhatta khors—such infrastructure can become a weapon: the digital extension of the arm-twisting, surveillance and extortion already associated with NADRA. Who in his right mind would hand over sensitive personal or corporate data to Sky47 if some major or colonel operating under Asim Munir’s authority could one day access it and use it to destroy him? The prominent presence of the Military Inc. bigwigs at the inauguration was revealing. Defence institutions and military-controlled businesses will naturally become major customers. But Kamran Khan’s loaded question pointed toward the greater danger: Will Asim Munir use the power of the state to herd Pakistan’s banks, financial houses, telecom companies and major industries into this “mother of all data centers”—sitting securely within his own sphere of influence? Before pressuring Pakistan’s businesses to place their data there, ask one simple question: Will the Sharif and Zardari families place all their private, corporate and political data in Sky47? If they will not, why should anyone else? Pakistan needs world-class digital infrastructure. It does not need a national data vault sitting in the pocket of an unelected power center. Without independent civilian regulation, enforceable privacy protections, transparent ownership, outside security audits and judicially controlled access, this is not digital sovereignty.
