Digital transformation is reshaping the development landscape by redefining how economies grow and how development outcomes are delivered. It promises greater productivity, improved service delivery, and new pathways for inclusion, yet its benefits remain unevenly distributed. For many developing countries, the challenge extends beyond simply adopting technology; it requires access to robust ecosystems, affordable financing, relevant skills, and a policy space that can nurture experimentation while safeguarding public interests. Against this backdrop, Pakistan is actively strengthening the core foundations of a digital economy. The launch of Raast, an instant payment system, is expanding financial inclusion and reducing transaction costs, enabling more efficient commerce for individuals and small businesses. The country is also supporting a growing startup ecosystem through regulatory facilitation and improved access to finance, including in fintech and emerging areas such as digital assets and blockchain applications. Moreover, Pakistan has emerged as a leading global hub for freelance and digital services, ranking among the top five worldwide. These developments hold potential for inclusive growth, export diversification, and resilience to external shocks. However, to translate potential into durable outcomes, continued focus is needed on ensuring digital inclusion reaches underserved regions, strengthening data privacy and cybersecurity, fostering digital literacy and advanced skills, and aligning regulatory frameworks with rapidly evolving technologies. In my view, Pakistan’s trajectory demonstrates that with clear strategic priorities and coherent governance, digital innovation can be a powerful engine of sustainable development—while also requiring vigilance to prevent new forms of inequality and risk. The STI Forum’s opening remarks on Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development underscore the importance of aligning digital progress with social and environmental goals, coupled with accountable and trustworthy governance. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad’s participation signals strong international collaboration as Pakistan builds a more inclusive, innovation-driven economy.
