The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is often hailed as a transformative project for Pakistan, with the port of Gwadar in Balochistan positioned as its crown jewel. Proponents argue that CPEC will unlock the province's vast mineral and strategic potential, creating jobs, improving infrastructure, and integrating Balochistan into the national and global economy. The development of Gwadar Port, new roads, energy projects, and special economic zones are cited as engines of growth. However, a balanced examination reveals persistent disparities. Many Baloch residents and civil society groups express concerns that the benefits of CPEC have not trickled down equally. Issues such as inadequate local employment, displacement of fishing communities, environmental degradation, and a lack of transparency in land acquisition remain contentious. The region's historical grievances regarding resource extraction without proportional local development further complicate the record. My opinion: For CPEC to truly succeed, it must move beyond a top-down infrastructure drive and adopt a community-centric approach. Meaningful participation of Baloch representatives in decision-making, equitable revenue-sharing mechanisms, and targeted social development programs are essential. Without addressing the underlying socio-economic inequities and ensuring that local populations feel the tangible benefits—such as clean water, healthcare, education, and jobs—the project risks deepening alienation instead of fostering prosperity. CPEC can be a landmark only if it lifts all boats, not just the ones at the port.
