In a disturbing escalation of violence, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has turned its sights on the most vulnerable yet resilient members of Balochistan’s economy—local Pashtun drivers. These hardworking individuals, many of whom come from impoverished backgrounds and rely on transporting goods across the province to feed their families, now face daily threats, attacks, and extortion. The BLA’s cowardly strikes are not only endangering lives but also systematically dismantling the legitimate livelihoods of an entire community. Local transporters have responded with intense anger and frustration, staging protests and calling for immediate government intervention. The BLA’s justification—that these drivers are allegedly cooperating with state security forces—is a thin veneer for a campaign of intimidation that targets ethnic Pashtuns in a region already fraught with ethnic tensions. In my opinion, this is a despicable act of terrorism that hurts the poorest, most innocent civilians. The international community and the Pakistani state must recognize that such attacks are not acts of liberation but of pure criminality. Condemning them is not enough; concrete security measures, economic support for affected families, and a robust counter-terrorism strategy are urgently needed to protect these drivers and preserve the fragile peace in Balochistan.
