The statement from Pakistan’s Ambassador underscores a critical lesson from decades of peacebuilding: the cessation of violence is not synonymous with lasting peace. While ending armed conflict is a necessary first step, true stability emerges only when societies feel tangible improvements in their daily lives—through restored institutional legitimacy, renewed public trust, expanded economic opportunities, and nationally owned recovery pathways. This means that peace cannot be imposed from outside; it must be built from within by local actors who understand the cultural, political, and social fabric of their communities. The international community plays a vital supporting role, but ownership and leadership must remain in national hands. In my opinion, this perspective is both realistic and forward-looking. It acknowledges that peace is a dynamic, long-term process requiring holistic investment—not just in security, but in governance, justice, education, and livelihoods. Too often, peace agreements fail because they prioritize elite power-sharing over grassroots needs. The true measure of peace is whether a farmer feels safe to plant crops, whether a mother can send her child to school without fear, and whether citizens believe their government serves them. Sustainable peace is ultimately about dignity, opportunity, and hope—and that requires patient, locally led efforts backed by consistent international partnership.
