In a historic move for digital education in one of Pakistan's most underserved regions, the Inspector General of FC Balochistan (North) officially inaugurated the first state-of-the-art IT Center at Government Girls Degree College, Chaman. This landmark initiative falls under the Balochistan Special Development Initiative (BSDI), a programme designed to accelerate socio-economic progress through targeted infrastructure and education projects. The new IT Center is equipped with modern computers, high-speed internet, and specialised software for teaching programming, graphic design, data analytics, and other digital skills. Its primary mission is to empower young women in the border town of Chaman—an area that has long faced security challenges, limited educational resources, and a severe gender gap in technology access. This initiative directly addresses the systemic underrepresentation of women in STEM fields across Balochistan. By providing a safe, dedicated space for girls to learn digital literacy, the center opens doors to higher education scholarships, remote freelance work, and formal employment in the growing digital economy. It also sends a powerful message: that the future of Balochistan includes its women as active participants in the technological revolution. In my opinion, this is a significant but overdue step. While the inauguration is commendable, true impact will depend on consistent funding, trained female instructors, community engagement to overcome cultural barriers, and job placement pathways. Without these follow-ups, the center risks becoming another underutilised facility. However, if the BSDI model proves sustainable, it could be replicated across other districts, transforming Balochistan from a digital backwater into a hub of tech-driven youth empowerment. The investment in education here is not just about hardware—it is about reshaping mindsets and giving young women the tools to rewrite their own futures.
