NEW DELHI / IMPHAL - Two soldiers of the Indian paramilitary Assam Rifles were killed on Monday when militants ambushed their convoy in Manipur's Ukhrul district, according to officials, as violence continues to grip the far-flung northeastern Indian state.

The attack occurred when the convoy was targeted using explosives and gunfire, with the soldiers killed reportedly belonging to the Sangshak post. Indian security forces have launched a search operation in the area following the ambush.

Manipur's Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh confirmed the attack in a statement, identifying the deceased as soldiers from the paramilitary Assam Rifles force.

Background of Conflict

Manipur has experienced periodic clashes between the predominantly Hindu Meitei majority and the mainly Christian Kuki minority for over three years, though the violence has spread in recent months and also drawn in Naga groups. The broader ethnic conflict has killed more than 250 people since it erupted in 2023.

The region has a long history of tensions over the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), a former British colonial-era law imposed by the Government of India in 1958 on indigenous peoples of Northeast India. Activists and scholars have documented thousands of deaths, arrests, torture, rape, and extra-judicial executions under the martial law. Women's movements such as the "Meira Paibi" (Women with Bamboo Torches) have emerged in protest, using sit-ins, protest marches, and bare-body protests to confront militarized violence.

Ongoing Search Operation

Following Monday's ambush, security forces have intensified search operations in the Ukhrul district area to track down the assailants. The region has seen similar attacks in the past, including a September 2025 ambush where two soldiers were killed and four others injured when assailants targeted a vehicle carrying 33 Assam Rifles soldiers near Manipur's state capital Imphal.
