RAWALPINDI -Β The Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, delivered a stern warning to India earlier this year regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, declaring that Pakistan holds the ultimate authority over the six rivers originating from Kashmir - a statement that continues to resonate across the region.

In a comprehensive interview with Al Jazeera, the military spokesperson firmly rejected any notion that India could block Pakistan's water supply, calling it "insane thinking"Β .

"Only a madman would think India can stop the flow of water to Pakistan,"Β DG ISPR declared.Β "It is not possible to cut off water for 240 million people"Β .

The Kashmir Connection

The ISPR chief emphasized that six rivers originate from the Kashmir region, which remains a disputed territory under United Nations resolutionsΒ . He pointed out that the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, allocated three rivers to each country under the assumption of the status quoΒ .

However, Chaudhry warned that if India violates the treaty - as New Delhi unilaterally announced in April following the Pahalgam attack - the calculus changes entirelyΒ .

"If the people of Kashmir decide to join Pakistan, all those rivers will belong to us, making India a lower riparian state,"Β he explainedΒ .Β "At that point, it will be for Pakistan to decide how to deal with that situation"Β .

"If India breaks the treaty and Kashmir joins Pakistan, all six rivers will come under Pakistan's control. This is a reality India will have to face"Β .

Consequences for Decades

The military spokesperson warned that any Indian attempt to weaponize water would trigger consequences that would be felt for generationsΒ .

"It will be such actions that the world will see and the consequences of that will be felt for years and decades to come,"Β Chaudhry stated in an interview with RT ArabicΒ .Β "Nobody dare stop water of Pakistan"Β .

He also dismissed Indian attempts to draw false parallels, stating:Β "India is not the US and Pakistan is not Afghanistan. India is not Israel, and Pakistan is not Palestine. Pakistan will not bow to Indian domination"Β .

The Core Issue: Kashmir

DG ISPR linked the water dispute to the unresolved Kashmir issue, asserting that lasting peace cannot be achieved until New Delhi addresses the dispute, which he described as an international matter involving Pakistan, China, and governed by UN resolutionsΒ .

"Until India sits down and talks, conflict potential will stay"Β .Β "Kashmir is not India's internal matter; it is a matter that concerns the international community"Β .
