The Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Bahawalpur is rapidly evolving into a fully functional mini-city spread over 5,000 acres in the Cholistan desert. Offering one of the best living standards at reasonable investment, it features residential blocks, a medical college, a university, a teaching hospital, a golf course, recreational parks, and shopping malls. Its proximity to the airport and the new cantonment of XXXI Corps, combined with the unique charm of high-low sand dune topography, makes it an ideal location. Currently, three DHAs are operational in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, with three more under construction in Multan, Bahawalpur, and Quetta, and two at preliminary stages in Gujranwala and Peshawar. This expansion ensures presence at every corps headquarters level, facilitating both civil and military personnel. In my opinion, the public's strong preference for military-led housing societies like DHA stems from a perception of superior planning, security, and infrastructure reliability compared to many private sector developments. These societies often deliver timely projects with enforced building regulations, well-maintained utilities, and green spaces, which appeal to middle- and upper-class families seeking stability. Moreover, the socio-economic benefits are significant: they create thousands of construction and service jobs, boost local real estate markets, attract investment in ancillary industries (retail, education, healthcare), and help decongest major cities by developing satellite towns in less-developed regions like Bahawalpur. However, concerns exist about land acquisition practices and affordability for lower-income groups. If managed transparently, military-led housing can be a powerful catalyst for balanced regional development and economic growth.
