The completion of five state-of-the-art Mother and Child hospitals in Attock, Mianwali, Layyah, Multan, and Bahawalnagar represents a landmark public health investment by the Punjab government. Each 200-bed facility—specializing in gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics with ICUs, modular operating theaters, and antenatal/postnatal wards—cost a total of 40 billion rupees. These hospitals aim to slash Punjab's alarmingly high infant mortality rate (45 per 1,000 live births) and maternal mortality rate (180 per 100,000 pregnancies) to manageable levels. With three more such facilities under construction in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Bahawalpur, the initiative signals a serious commitment to bringing specialized healthcare to citizens' doorsteps. In my opinion, while this spending is crucial for saving lives and improving maternal-child health outcomes, it must be viewed within Pakistan’s tight fiscal space. The burgeoning population—over 240 million and growing at 2% annually—places immense strain on public finances. Welfare spending on health is not a luxury but an economic necessity: healthier mothers and children mean a more productive future workforce and reduced long-term healthcare costs. However, without simultaneous investment in family planning, education, and revenue generation, such projects risk becoming unsustainable. The government must balance immediate healthcare infrastructure with structural reforms to ensure that the population growth does not outpace the benefits of these hospitals. Ideally, this network should be paired with preventive care and awareness campaigns to maximize its impact on reducing mortality rates and curbing unsustainable demographic pressure.
