The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is far more than a humanitarian stopgap; it is the embodiment of the international community's collective responsibility toward Palestinian refugees, operating under the privileges and immunities granted by international law. However, a reported funding shortfall of $220 million now threatens to cripple the delivery of essential services—education, healthcare, and food aid—to over five million registered refugees who depend entirely on UNRWA's support. This crisis is not merely a budgetary gap; it is a political litmus test. We believe UNRWA's mandate must not only be preserved but strengthened and fully funded. The killing of 392 UNRWA personnel since the onset of the Gaza conflict demands immediate accountability—these are not statistics but human beings who died while serving the most vulnerable. In my view, the calls to dismantle UNRWA are dangerously shortsighted. The Agency cannot be divorced from the core final-status issue of Palestine refugees. The true solution is not to eliminate the lifeline, but to end the Israeli occupation, enable the return of refugees in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions, and realize a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the capital of an independent, sovereign Palestine. Without this political horizon, cutting UNRWA's funding is not a fiscal decision—it is a choice to deepen suffering and entrench injustice.
