Meanwhile, many in Pakistan have welcomed the development, viewing it as a check on Taliban influence. However, a deeper analysis reveals that Iran's foreign policy is fundamentally transactional and driven by its own geopolitical and sectarian interests, not by any lasting allegiance to Pakistan or the Taliban. Tehran's outreach to anti-Taliban elements is likely a hedge against a potential Taliban-aligned insurgency spilling over its borders, as well as a bid to maintain leverage in Afghanistan's power dynamics. In my opinion, Islamabad should not mistake Iran's temporary alignment for genuine partnership. The history of Tehran's shifting alliances—from support for the Taliban's enemies during the 1990s to cooperation against ISIS, and now cautious distancing—illustrates that Iran prioritizes its national security above all else. Pakistan's reliance on Iran as a strategic partner in Afghanistan is therefore fraught with risk, as Tehran could pivot again if its interests change. This episode underscores the need for Pakistan to diversify its diplomatic options rather than assume Iranian support will remain consistent.
