ISLAMABAD - Today, Pakistan remembers one of its greatest military heroes, Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider), on the anniversary of his martyrdom during the 1999 Kargil conflict. He was found with his machine gun in his hand and a smile on his face, having taken on more than 20 enemy soldiers .

The Battle of Tiger Hill

On July 5, 1999, Captain Sher Khan was defending five strategic posts at an altitude of 17,000 feet in the Gultari sector when Indian forces, backed by two battalions, launched a massive assault on Tiger Hill . Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing severe enemy fire, he led a daring counter-attack to reclaim a lost post, personally engaging the enemy in close combat [citation:7]. During the fierce battle, he was fatally wounded by machine-gun fire and embraced martyrdom [citation:8].

A Rare Tribute from the Enemy

What makes Captain Sher Khan's story truly extraordinary is the recognition he received from the enemy. Brigadier M.P.S. Bajwa, the Indian commander of the 192 Mountain Brigade, was so impressed by Khan's bravery that he wrote a citation for him and placed it in his pocket while returning his body [citation:9][citation:10]. Brigadier Bajwa later wrote:

"Captain Karnal Sher Khan of 12 NLI has fought very bravely and he must be given his due recognition" [citation:11].

Pakistan initially refused to accept his body, but on the insistence of the Red Cross, it was finally received. He was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military gallantry award [citation:12].

A Legacy of Courage

Born on January 1, 1970, in Swabi, Captain Sher Khan was known as the "Lion of Kargil" [citation:14]. A cadet college has been established in his honor, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of Pakistani soldiers and citizens alike [citation:13]. His unmatched courage and the spirit of Jihad remain a shining example of sacrifice for the nation 🇵🇰.
