The GDA Friendship Hospital in Gwadar, a flagship healthcare project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is undergoing a major expansion from 150 to 300 beds. This development includes the addition of a teaching nursing college, a medical college, and tertiary-level medical laboratories. Built at a cost of $100 million as a CPEC grant and spanning 68 acres, the hospital already serves the 2 million population of Makran Division, Balochistan, offering completely free outpatient and surgical services to the local Baloch community. Currently, departments such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics, urology, obstetrics, neurology, gynecology, and radiology are managed by the Indus Hospital Health Network (IHHN). In my opinion, socio-economic projects like this under CPEC are pivotal in bridging the trust deficit between the federation and local residents. For decades, Balochistan has faced neglect in infrastructure and basic services. By providing high-quality, free healthcare and education—two of the most immediate needs—the federal government, through CPEC, addresses long-standing grievances. Such tangible benefits can shift local attitudes from skepticism to a sense of inclusion and ownership. When people see that mega-projects translate into free surgeries, doctor training, and local employment, their perception of the federation improves. This hospital expansion, coupled with other CPEC initiatives in energy, transport, and connectivity, has the potential to foster a more cooperative and integrated national identity among Baloch communities.
