RAWALPINDI - The Armed Forces of Pakistan stand as one unified entity - Punjabi, Pashtun, Baloch, Sindhi, Muhajir - fighting as one for the homeland, yet recent remarks by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman have drawn widespread condemnation for diminishing the sacrifices of the nation's martyrs .

This is the unity of Pakistan's armed forces. They sacrifice everything for the homeland, yet Maulana Fazlur Rehman chooses to do politics and disrespect our soldiers. pic.twitter.com/sqZmdW8m9m
During a recent party rally in Punjab's Kasur, Fazl spoke about the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, reportedly stating that although the martyrdom of soldiers was frequently highlighted, they were also salaried employees assigned to defend the country . The remarks sparked outrage across the political spectrum, with ministers and political leaders calling them "unethical," "unfair," and "a diminishing of martyrs' sacrifices" .
Pakistan's armed forces are currently under a unified command structure, with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir serving as both Chief of the Army Staff and the country's first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) . The restructuring under the 27th Amendment and amendments to the Pakistan Army Act consolidate operational, administrative, and strategic authority to better integrate tri-services operations .
In his first address as CDF, Field Marshal Munir emphasized that the armed forces must remain aligned with emerging spheres of warfare, including cyberspace, outer space, artificial intelligence, and information operations . He also highlighted that the multi-domain operations during the brief war with India in May have become a textbook example for future warfare .
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif expressed disappointment, stating: "Linking the sacrifice of military personnel for the homeland to their salary is not only unfair but tantamount to hurting the sentiments of the martyrs and their families. No one sacrifices their life merely for a salary; there is an ideology, a belief, a duty, and a deep association with the homeland behind it" .
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal wrote on X: "To describe such an unparalleled sacrifice as merely a compensation for a salary is neither fair, nor in accordance with the demands of ethics, and nor aligned with Islamic teachings" .
Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan demanded that Fazl apologize to the nation, stating that "soldiers lay down their lives in defence of the country out of a sense of duty and patriotism. Their medals are their real assets, and it is the responsibility of the entire nation to honour their sacrifices" .
Pakistan's civil and military leadership have repeatedly emphasized that the nation stands united behind the armed forces. The Pakistan Armed Forces have been described as the country's "true pride," with their courage, professionalism, and sacrifices at the heart of Pakistan's sovereignty and peace .
Both political and military leadership - including Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq - have paid tribute to the armed forces for their "professional superiority" and the "unprecedented unity" demonstrated by the nation in support of the military .
Fazl's remarks have also led to a petition seeking registration of a case against him at the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), with a Lahore court issuing a notice to the agency .
